What Was Hot and Not at the 2015 Grammys

Living in Germany has many advantages, but one definite disadvantage is the time difference between here and the States! I am a huge fashion and music geek, so I had to see the Grammys LIVE. Yep – I stayed up until 5:30 am this morning to see it all! How many of you saw it?

Though I am dragging ass today, I must share my “Hot & Not” fashion picks!

WHAT WAS HOT!

1. Gwen Stefani in Atelier Versace

imagesVOLLM0FS

I seriously need to know what Gwen does to keep getting more & more gorgeous! She does not age! This jumpsuit is the perfect marriage of high fashion & rock n roll. LOVE IT!

2. Zendaya in Vivienne Westwood

zendaya-grammy-2015-red-carpet

At first I thought she got her hair cut into this adorable pixie, but it is a wig! I think she should just do it – it’s gorgeous! This dress is sexy without trying too hard, and the colors look amazing on her. So chic!

3. Chrissy Tiegen in Pucci

imagesDOT7V0EV

There were a lot of cut out designs on the carpet- Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea, and Taylor Swift all wore gowns with various cutouts. But, Chrissy Tiegen does the cutout trend perfectly. Sexy, sophisticated, and modern glam!

4. Beyonce’ in Proenza Schouler.

beyonce-grammy-2015-red-carpet

This is my favorite combination of the sheer trend and low cleavage. It’s a dress that could have gone too far into trashy land, but it’s tailored perfectly. Go Queen B!

5. Katy Perry in Zuhair Murad

images6O6FX9TG

Only Katy can have lavender hair AND silver beading/fringe and it doesn’t come off as too much. This dress is like an updated 1940s starlet dress, and it’s fabulous!

NOT SO MUCH…

1. Rihanna in Giambattista Valli

rihanna-grammy-2015-red-carpet

This is clearly a dress where you either love or hate it. She’s made some Best Dressed lists, but when I look at it, all I can think of is…

images570F4E6D

2. Kim Kardashian in Jean Paul Gaultier

images2U0EZGZG

Kim, Ric Flair called and wants his robe back. Woooo!

untitled

3. Madonna in Givenchy

imagesHPU89TG4

I LOVE Madonna. She’s always been ahead of everyone else when it comes to fashion, but I am just confused by this burlesque/matador outfit.

4. Jane Fonda in Balmain

1423451620_jane-fonda-zoom

First, it’s VERY green. Second, there is gold drool coming out of her chest.

5. Meghan Trainor in Galia Lahav

meghan-trainor-grammy-2015-red-carpet

This dress just says to me, “my stylist said sheer and lace is popular now, so here I am.” It’s not cut in a flattering way, and the black appliques in the front look like spiders rolling down.

THE ??? MOMENTS:

Gotta love it!

What Was Hot and Not at the Emmys

Greetings all! Did you watch the 66th Annual Emmys? As a TV and fashion fanatic, of course I did!

I’m a big fan of Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and The Good Wife, so I was rooting for all three to win big (and congrats to Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and Anna Gunn! Such a good show…)!

There were LOTS of great looks, but here are my top choices of Hot Looks of the Night:

1. Julianna Marguiles

juliannam

I LOVE Julianna’s ombre’ effect gown. Beautiful fit, just enough shine, and is sexy and elegant. This is how 48 (!) is done. Congrats on that Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama!

2. Halle Berry

rs_634x1024-140825200759-634_halle-berry-emmy-awards-red-carpet-press-082514

I think Halle could wear a burlap bag and still look amazing. From her signature pixie (love the longer bangs), to the gorgeous dusty rose color, the touch of metallic on her sash, and the nude heels…perfect!

3. Melissa McCarthy

1409007803_melissa-mccarthy-560_640

This is probably my favorite dress that Melissa’s worn to an awards show. It’s beautifully tailored. I love the detail on her waist, and the tulle adds movement without looking like a costume. Most of all, she looks HOT!

4. Michelle Dockery

Michelle%20Dockery400x600

This is such a great departure from the typical “awards dress.” Great detail on the bodice, the colors are vibrant without overpowering, and it looks light. So pretty against her ivory complexion!

5. Kelly Osborne/Julia Roberts

1409002754_kelly-osbourne-560_6401409014162_julia-roberts-560_640

Both of these looks are gorgeous for different reasons. Kelly can work unusual looks like no one else, and I am nuts for the hair with this unexpected maroon and white dress. She wears it, and it doesn’t wear her.

Julia has AMAZING legs, and I’m glad she worked hers with this look. It’s short, but not too short. The delicate beading and color keeps it elegant. She looks fierce!

WHITE RULES THE RED CARPET

White popped up all over the carpet, with some gorgeous results. Here is “White Done Right.”

1409019982_sofia-vergara-560_640Laverne%20Cox400x600emmykatemara

Sophia Vergara brought the va va va voom, Laverne Cox worked a gorgeous cape, and Kate Mara’s column dress with the sheer skirt had a high fashion vibe. All great looks!

TRY AGAIN NEXT TIME…

Unfortunately, along with the “hits,” there were misses. Here’s the “not so great” carpet moments:

1. Lena Dunham

Lena%20Dunham400x600

I’m all for taking a risk with fashion, and I don’t expect Lena to do the “typical” look. Many times, I love her style, but this pajama top with what looks like a long square dance skirt just does not work. Sorry, Lena!

2. Laura Prepon

Laura%20Prepon400x600

Laura is way too pretty for this dress (I think anyone would be). The neckline is strange, the peplum makes the dress busy, and the color is unflattering.

3. Amanda Peet

Amanda_Peet400x600

I am not trying to pick on a pregnant lady! However, this dress does nothing for Amanda. The material and print reminds me of an old bed sheet, the sleeves are unflattering, and her hairstyle lacks polish. She’s lovely, but the dress isn’t.

4. Kirsten Wiig

Kristen%20Wiig400x600

I LOVE Kirsten Wiig. She’s incredibly funny, and I was let down by this look. The dress is fine, but the styling is all wrong. The black heels don’t work with this material. the spray tan is too much, and her hair and makeup is too heavy handed.

5. Zooey Deschanel

Zooey%20Deschanel400x600

Zooey is usually so spot on with her style, so I was confused by this one. Again, it’s a styling problem. The hot pink color works for Zooey, but the dress itself is a bit “high school homecoming” (plus, BAD wrinkling on the bottom!).With the parted bangs and curling iron locks, she looks like she’s about to get on the homecoming float, not the red carpet.

What were your favorites? Looks that left you flat?

I heart comments!

The Show Must Go On!

Ralph Lauren BW

Does it get any better than having a great event to wear your foxiest dress and perform in front of hundreds of people? That’s what I did last night at the 19th annual TOPPER Awards.

Toppers 2014 trophies

What is TOPPERS? It is the yearly recognition of excellence in military community theatre, with awards that range from “Best Prop Design” to “Best Debut Performance” to the coveted “Best Actor/Actress” trophies, to “Best Play” and “Best Musical.”  Roughly a dozen theatres from around Italy, Germany, and Belgium compete and cheer each other on. It is one GREAT time!

Best Actress in a Comedy, 2013!

Best Actress in a Comedy, 2013!

I’ve had the honor to perform twice as a “Toppers Singer,” which involves learning six songs with choreography. Miraculously, we rehearse only about a handful of times before 11 of us get in front of our peers, either to be cheered or silently judged. Thankfully, we all passed the test and received enthusiastic applause. WHEW.

Remembering words/movements aside, I sprained my knee (yep, the one that’s been giving me trouble!) the day before performing!

So, what do I do? I tape it up, add a painkiller cream (courtesy of fellow singer Annie), and go out there and give it all I’ve got. YES, it hurt like hell to do some of the movements, but as every performer knows, THE SHOW MUST GO ON!

Toppers 2014 medley

Toppers 2014 performing

Fashion wise, I couldn’t work any cute heels, however, I did get to wear this fierce Lauren by Ralph Lauren gown I got on sale from Nordstrom. LOVE the lace and sequin detail!!! (There is a sexy side slit, but my knee is wrapped, so I didn’t show that off)

After the last award was handed out, pictures taken, and cake consumed, the Hubby and I ended our evening at an “after awards” party, where MORE drinks and laughter followed. 🙂

I’m so grateful for this experience! Hopefully, if I do get to go to Toppers next year, I won’t be injured!

Love, laughter, and shoes:)

Oh Oscar! The Fab and the Drab

After spending a full day off of social media, the Hubby and I got to watch AFN’s (Armed Forces Network) replay of the 2014 Oscars. I’ve been watching the Oscars ever since mom and dad let me stay up when E.T. was nominated for Best Picture (ok, I am dating myself), but the point is, it’s an annual tradition. As an actor, I have a special appreciation for all the work it takes to put a production together, plus the training and focus needed to create a memorable character.

But who are we kidding? We also watch the Oscars for the fashion! So, here are the looks that caught my attention:

1. Meryl Streep. Her look is getting mixed reviews, but I love it. She knows who she is, and knows that she is not a mermaid gown/rhinestone/corset kind of gal. She likes to keep her look simple and refined, plus she dresses right for a woman who is in her 60s, yet she looks sexy. Meryl can do no wrong in my book!

Marvelous Meryl! 18 Oscar nominations.

Marvelous Meryl! 18 Oscar nominations.

2. Sandra Bullock. This is how 49 is done. She is in fantastic shape and looks gorgeous in this Alexander McQueen gown. She is another woman who looks completely comfortable in her skin, and her acting chops are so spot on (her moment in Gravity when she talks about the death of her daughter got to me). I want to be her when I grow up.

Fabulous Fortysomething Sandra!

Fabulous Fortysomething Sandra!

3. Cate Blanchett. She wowed me in this Giorgio Armani gown. Jokingly, she told Ryan Seacrest that it was “heavy, but I love it!” I haven’t seen Blue Jasmine yet, but I know she must be amazing. She is the heir apparent to Meryl Streep.

Best Actress, 2014!

Best Actress, 2014!

4. Angelina Jolie. I was happy to see her in a color besides black, which tends to be her signature. She looked amazing; glowing, even. This Elie Saab gown brought out a joyful and serene side that we don’t get to see from her very often. Congrats to her on her Humanitarian Oscar as well!

That amazing bead work!

That amazing bead work!

5. Jennifer Garner. A mom, actress, and wife to Ben Affleck has got it going on in her Oscar de la Renta fringe dress. I chose this pic to show off the great movement! I like how she kept the rest of her look simple and polished.

Work it, girl!

Work it, girl!

6. I also loved Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada dress. She broke my heart in 12 Years a Slave, and she definitely stole hearts with her beautiful Oscar acceptance speech! I just wish I could carry off a plunging neckline. However, this look is not for the busty girl!

Very well done, Ms. Nyong'o!

Very well done, Ms. Nyong’o!

Ok…so a few looks I was not nuts about. Basically, whenever an actor is trying too hard with fashion, it just looks wrong. I know this is typically a stylist’s fault, but the actor has the final say (I would think!).

This is not to bash the actors ( a la Fashion Police -I’ll leave that to Joan & Co.), just some things to consider when dressing.

Julia Roberts – there is something kind of cheap looking about this lace overlay. I’m sure it’s not, but it’s the applique in the center that’s throwing it off.

She's too gorgeous for this dress.

She’s too gorgeous for this dress.

Anna Kendrick. She’s very talented, but it seems that every time she is at an event, she’s wearing something that doesn’t bring her out. The dresses usually wear her, not the other way around.

Way too much going on here.

Way too much going on here.

Liza! She is a legend, and the ultimate entertainer. But for someone who still has celebrated legs in her late 60s, I have no idea what is going on here. Plus, her blue streaks are just saying “trying to be hip.”

Love her...but...

Love her…but…

Finally – I did not love Charlize Theron’s Dior gown. It looked heavy and too severe, plus the top of the bodice seems very uncomfortable with the points! She is a stunning woman, but not a fan of this dress.

A little too "costume-y."

A little too “costume-y.”

Overall, as someone who loves wearing black, many of the black dresses this year just did not work!

Here’s the closest I’ll get to an Oscar – my 2013 win for Best Actress in a Comedy at the TOPPERS (military community theatre awards)

"They like me! They really like me!"

“They like me! They really like me!”

What were YOUR favorites? Dresses that dulled you? Let me know!

Love, laughter, and shoes!
