#ShopMyCloset Part 1: The ABCs

Glasses, Cover Girl

Glasses, Cover Girl

Hey Divas! So, I’ve been keeping my pledge to #shopmycloset and not buy anything new for three months, BUT I do get bored easily with my style. How to change it up? By using the ABCs – Accessories, Bold Color, and Cosmetics!

A is for Accessories

A couple of years ago, I finally accepted that I needed reading glasses.  Not wanting to settle for anything dowdy, I chose this foxy pair from Cover Girl. Now, I like to put these on for a “nice but naughty” look for date night!

Glasses 1

Who can forget the power of a hot pair of heels? Since I was rocking all black for my outfit, I had to go all out with these gold metallic from Charlotte Russe.

B: Bold Color

The easiest way to change up your look without a commitment is using temporary color in the hair. When I was in between hair appointments and the white hairs were popping out, I grabbed some lip stain and streaked it in. I loved the effect so much, I ended up getting red highlights at my appointment!

This was just some lip stain! Washed out easily!

C: Cosmetics

Of course, makeup can change the whole feel and mood of your look. I’ve been experimenting with glam and natural, and I’ve really come to embrace the minimal as well as the glamorous.

Pared back and pretty.

Lighten Up, Brighten Up: Working a Tricky Trend

Feelin' sassy!

Feelin’ sassy!

Ever feel you need to make a few tweaks in your life? As I’ve been anxiously waiting for our belongings to arrive here in Guam (well, it’s only been like three months now…but who’s counting?), I’ve been feeling restless and needing to do something creative. So, the easiest thing for me is changing up the hair and remixing my wardrobe.

Blonde highlight

Voila! Nothing like adding some blonde highlights for some fun. After all, isn’t that what they say about blondes?

Things are looking up!

Things are looking up!

In a recent InStyle issue, one of the trends featured is working a metallic look for daytime. I think it’s a tricky trend to do without going overboard, but after picking up this cute Calvin Klein tee with metallic touches (FOR FREE from our Airman’s Attic!), I thought pairing it with my Primark stretchy metallic pencil skirt would work wonderfully. Both pieces have touches of shine and don’t compete against each other.

Metallic 6

The key is making sure the accessories are neutral. My new black mule wedges from Shoedazzle and my “new to me” Dooney & Burke purse (thanks, Stacy!) keep the overall look grounded.

I also focused my makeup to lighter, neutral colors on my eyes and let the deep berry on my lips be the only strong color.

I’m all ready for a date with the Hubby!

What’s a tricky trend you’ve worked out? What do you do to change up your look?

Until next time, lovelies!

What Was Hot and Not at the Emmys

Greetings all! Did you watch the 66th Annual Emmys? As a TV and fashion fanatic, of course I did!

I’m a big fan of Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and The Good Wife, so I was rooting for all three to win big (and congrats to Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and Anna Gunn! Such a good show…)!

There were LOTS of great looks, but here are my top choices of Hot Looks of the Night:

1. Julianna Marguiles

juliannam

I LOVE Julianna’s ombre’ effect gown. Beautiful fit, just enough shine, and is sexy and elegant. This is how 48 (!) is done. Congrats on that Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama!

2. Halle Berry

rs_634x1024-140825200759-634_halle-berry-emmy-awards-red-carpet-press-082514

I think Halle could wear a burlap bag and still look amazing. From her signature pixie (love the longer bangs), to the gorgeous dusty rose color, the touch of metallic on her sash, and the nude heels…perfect!

3. Melissa McCarthy

1409007803_melissa-mccarthy-560_640

This is probably my favorite dress that Melissa’s worn to an awards show. It’s beautifully tailored. I love the detail on her waist, and the tulle adds movement without looking like a costume. Most of all, she looks HOT!

4. Michelle Dockery

Michelle%20Dockery400x600

This is such a great departure from the typical “awards dress.” Great detail on the bodice, the colors are vibrant without overpowering, and it looks light. So pretty against her ivory complexion!

5. Kelly Osborne/Julia Roberts

1409002754_kelly-osbourne-560_6401409014162_julia-roberts-560_640

Both of these looks are gorgeous for different reasons. Kelly can work unusual looks like no one else, and I am nuts for the hair with this unexpected maroon and white dress. She wears it, and it doesn’t wear her.

Julia has AMAZING legs, and I’m glad she worked hers with this look. It’s short, but not too short. The delicate beading and color keeps it elegant. She looks fierce!

WHITE RULES THE RED CARPET

White popped up all over the carpet, with some gorgeous results. Here is “White Done Right.”

1409019982_sofia-vergara-560_640Laverne%20Cox400x600emmykatemara

Sophia Vergara brought the va va va voom, Laverne Cox worked a gorgeous cape, and Kate Mara’s column dress with the sheer skirt had a high fashion vibe. All great looks!

TRY AGAIN NEXT TIME…

Unfortunately, along with the “hits,” there were misses. Here’s the “not so great” carpet moments:

1. Lena Dunham

Lena%20Dunham400x600

I’m all for taking a risk with fashion, and I don’t expect Lena to do the “typical” look. Many times, I love her style, but this pajama top with what looks like a long square dance skirt just does not work. Sorry, Lena!

2. Laura Prepon

Laura%20Prepon400x600

Laura is way too pretty for this dress (I think anyone would be). The neckline is strange, the peplum makes the dress busy, and the color is unflattering.

3. Amanda Peet

Amanda_Peet400x600

I am not trying to pick on a pregnant lady! However, this dress does nothing for Amanda. The material and print reminds me of an old bed sheet, the sleeves are unflattering, and her hairstyle lacks polish. She’s lovely, but the dress isn’t.

4. Kirsten Wiig

Kristen%20Wiig400x600

I LOVE Kirsten Wiig. She’s incredibly funny, and I was let down by this look. The dress is fine, but the styling is all wrong. The black heels don’t work with this material. the spray tan is too much, and her hair and makeup is too heavy handed.

5. Zooey Deschanel

Zooey%20Deschanel400x600

Zooey is usually so spot on with her style, so I was confused by this one. Again, it’s a styling problem. The hot pink color works for Zooey, but the dress itself is a bit “high school homecoming” (plus, BAD wrinkling on the bottom!).With the parted bangs and curling iron locks, she looks like she’s about to get on the homecoming float, not the red carpet.

What were your favorites? Looks that left you flat?

I heart comments!

Brrrr Back to School!

Time for a jacket!

Time for a jacket!

BRRR…It has certainly cooled down in Germany. Apparently Summer decided it was time to go elsewhere! For the past couple of weeks, the temperature has struggled to get into the 60s, and I’ve reluctantly had to set my summer maxis aside.

But there is something about the crisp air that reminds of the fun of “going back to school” shopping! Although I am well out of my schooling days, I teach theatre and voice for a living, so a teacher needs to look sharp on the first day, right?

Red jacket 1

I remember as a young teen, how IMPORTANT it was to make a statement on the first day. How you’d look could possibly set the tone for what kind of year (socially) it would be. I would spend two hours before bed, trying on my new clothes and agonizing over the “right” one. Then, the next morning, after taking an hour to do my hair (it was long then!) I would end up changing my mind about what to wear at least three times before settling on what I would wear on the runway of Fremont High School.

Red jacket 2

Moto Jacket- FOREVER 21 PLUS Tee & Maxi Skirt – H&M Necklace – a birthday gift!

Today, thankfully, it doesn’t take me but 10 minutes to shape my pixie and I’ve got my day makeup down to 8 minutes. However, I still find myself stuck on what to wear from time to time. I think that comes from trying to be creative with a look, plus comfort is a big factor for me.

I’m in love with moto jackets for fall! I can dress one up or down, and the jacket is that perfect weight between seasons. Just right for keeping a little chill off! This one from Forever 21 Plus fits perfectly.

What are YOUR memories of the first day of school? I’d love to read your memories!

Love, laughter, and shoes…

xx Melanie.

When you have a bad hair day…

Ah, summer. It’s a time of lightweight tees, floaty maxi dresses, sandals, and shorts! With all these wonderful things we love to wear, it’s also a time for humidity, which means…BAD HAIR DAYS!

As you can see, I keep my hair short in a hybrid of Halle Berry and mid 1980s Sheena Easton. Most times, it looks like this:

Floral skt CU

But since my hair is thick and naturally curly, on those especially sticky days, there’s no amount of product that can tame my curly top!

So during our trip to Italy, I took a cue from Jennifer Lopez and worked a mini turban with a scarf!

My new favorite hairspray is L’Oreal’s Elnett Satin. Yes, it is a bit pricey (usually around $16), but TOTALLY worth it.

I’ve never had a hairspray that allowed a good hold AND I could still run my fingers through!

What’s YOUR favorite hair tricks and products for summer?

BY THE WAY…CONGRATULATIONS to my Parisian Giveaway winner, Cheryl from fatandfabulousme!

Be sure to check out her blog, it’s pretty awesome!

Thanks to everyone who entered! Don’t worry, I will be starting a ONCE A MONTH GIVEAWAY, so stay tuned for August!
