Phrases I Hate

“Act your age.” “Ladies don’t act like that.” Those two phrases were ones I dreaded hearing when I was growing up.  I never truly understood what they meant, but now I am older, the context of those words make me cringe and upset. Why?

Because we direct them at girls. We expect them to mature faster and be quieter, more “ladylike” in demeanor. Their enthusiastic energy gets toned down, their “tomboyish” attitudes and activities looked at as something weird, or a “phase.”

IMG_20161026_120906.jpg

There’s a famous saying, “Well behaved women seldom make history.” To me, it means not being quiet when people are hurting.  To not accept poor treatment. To rise above expectations. To DO YOUR OWN THING, regardless of age.  I am in my mid 40s and still like amusement parks. I listen to everything from Rihanna to Skrillex and jazz too. Wearing crazy leggings makes me happy, and yes- my hubby is 12 years my junior. Some people might think I haven’t “grown up,” but on the contrary, I’m growing in experiences. If we stop trying new things, taking risks, or sharing an opinion, then you have stopped experiencing life.

So, to my fellow “ladies” out there: Stop apologizing for your ideas. Don’t second guess yourself.  Trust your instincts. Say what you mean.  Be brave and DO YOU!

Until next time,

Love, laughter and shoes-

xoxo, Melanie.

Bloggers Unite in Black & White!

With the fabulous Signe Savant!

With the fabulous Signe Savant!

There’s the old saying, “great minds think alike.” For me and fellow blogger and friend Signe Savant, “great fashionistas style alike!”

Signe Savant, of thedailysavant.com, is “responsible” for turning me on to blogging. She and I are both instructors for a youth facility on a military base (she was assisting me with a pom pom squad!), and I kept noticing her fabulous sense of style. When I asked her one day where she got her clothes, she explained about her blogging and the opportunities/freebies she’s received from various retailers. Well, that definitely got me interested!

Yesterday, at a “good bye” party for a mutual co-worker, we both showed up rocking black and white!

I love her crop top and floral skirt! So chic!

I debuted my new Forever 21 Plus chevron sundress. It’s so super comfortable, and easy to dress up or down.

QUESTION(S) OF THE DAY:

How did you get started blogging? Have you met or collaborated with any other bloggers?

Let me know!

Am I a Fashion Victim?

I really enjoy blogging about fashion; it’s become a new passion in my life. However, I am noticing that I am much more susceptible to buying clothes and makeup than ever before! Other bloggers’ looks, enticing emails of special sales, magazine layouts, and Birchbox sample boxes make me feel compelled to “stay current.” The pressure to create a great outfit for pictures is real, and I worry about what I have is “blog worthy.”

Anyone else feel like me? At times, I feel so silly for worrying about this at all.

I also wonder if I’m becoming a slave to trends. For example, I just ordered a floral skirt, thinking “well, floral prints are in right now” versus “will I look utterly ridiculous in that?” I’ve never been a florals kind of gal! Am I stepping out the box, or just boxing myself in to trendiness?

Let’s talk crop tops for a second. They are HOT this season, and I’ve seen examples of curvy gals rocking them well. I’ve actually starting thinking, “which top should I choose for my blog?”

Not considering: “YOUR BOOBS ARE HUGE, AND YOU’LL LOOK LIKE A BOX.”

Perhaps we’ll skip that one!

One thing’s for sure, I don’t want to lose my own sense of style.

My New Pledge:

1. I’m Not 20, and It’s OK.

2. Not Every Trend is For Me.

3. I Don’t Have to Try to Impress.

4. Stay True to Me.

5. Don’t Buy it Because it’s on Sale!

6. Have Fun with Fashion, Don’t Take it So Seriously!

So, keeping with my new pledge, here are a couple of my new favorite looks. This is truly my style:)

It’s important to try new things to avoid getting in a rut. However, there’s a fine line between being stylish and becoming a fashion victim.

So, if you catch me wearing those Teva inspired Prada sandals – please stop me and send me to an intervention, because I’ve gone too far.

Not for me.

Not for me.

Throwback Thursday Throws Me a Curve

Ah, #ThrowbackThursday. You clever bastard. I search for fun pics to post, and I am stopped cold by finding pics of me from 10 years ago, looking, well, FABULOUS. Funny enough, during this point in my life, I thought I needed to take 10-15 lbs off.

Circa 2004.

Circa 2004.

But here it is 2014, and though I feel I’ve come to a healthier state of mind in terms of body acceptance and pushing to expand the idea of what we consider to be “beautiful,” I cannot escape the fact that I am too heavy now.

Yesterday during a doctor’s checkup, I stepped on the scale (always my favorite part) and noticed that 5 lbs crept on over the last month! How could this be?

Was it the Girl Scout cookies I inhaled over the past week? The popcorn at the movies? The Chex Muddy Buddies we devoured while watching March Madness? All of it? Probably.

I’m not going to beat myself up over the gain, I won’t go there. However, I need to put the brakes on the treats. There’s no denying that getting heavier isn’t going to help my back get stronger,  make the joints feel better, or lower my chances or developing diabetes or heart problems. It’s more than a vanity thing for me.

So, I’m going to do this a step at a time. Add more veggies, watch the sugar, drink more water. Walk as much as I can handle while doing physical therapy. And of course, rock some fashion while doing it all!

I don’t expect to become a supermodel. I just want to feel good and if that means having to lose some of my caboose, that’s ok!

"London calling" socks!

“London calling” socks!

Feeling “blue from my top to my toes.”

It’s a struggle sometimes to “age gracefully.” Most of the time, I’m feeling good, working it for all I’ve got, but then there’s that pesky white hair in my eyebrow -the deepening line around the mouth- the softening jaw, that can throw me into a funk.

I think that’s normal, though -to fight through the feeling of “aging.” We want to feel healthy and look good. It’s just navigating the delicate balancing act of accepting what looks graceful versus becoming a plastic freak show. I don’t want to be a slave to my weight or my age.

So here’s for trying to eat better, exercise a little more, and living in the moment. Cheers!

Look for my next post to come from PARIS! Au revoir until next time!

Love, laughter, and shoes –

xx Melanie.

Thank You! Over 1,000 Hits!

When I started CURVES RULE a few months ago, I never imagined the day would come when my blog would hit 1,000 hits! Plus, I reached 100 “likes” on my posts as well! THANK YOU to all of you who have followed, shared, liked, and commented!

My goal with this blog is to help create more acceptance of all body types, whether we be petite or curvaceous. Those of us Fashionistas who are a size 14 and up crave beautiful, stylish, and affordable fashion, just like anyone else. More retailers are paying attention (especially online), but we need more fashion in the stores, too. We will get there! Fashion is for ALL!

In celebration of the new milestone, I decided to change up the design of my page. I think it looks cleaner, and I hope you all like it! Be sure to check out my page “Air Force Wife Life” for traveling tales and what it’s like being in a military family. I will be adding on to that part of my blog very soon.

And last, but not least…I am planning my first giveaway soon! With spring coming, it’s time for some cute new things to wear, and I want to thank you by giving something pretty to celebrate! Stay tuned!

It won't be from Jimmy Choo...but the prize will still be nice!

I’m a Liebster Award Nominee!

How cool! The sweet Alley Tiffy of Classygirlschic nominated me for the Liebster Award, which is recognition from members from the blogging community! I’m on a mission to grow my audience, and I want to help other bloggers grow as well.

Liebster Award

Here are the rules:

You must link back to the person who nominated you.
You must answer the questions given to you.
You must pick 11 nominees to answer 11 questions you choose for them.
You cannot nominate the person who nominated you.
You must tell the nominees that they have been nominated by you.
So, here are the answers to what Ms. Tiffy asked me:)

1)What is your favorite makeup brand?

I think it’s safe to say I’m a big fan of Clinique. Their products work great on my sensitive skin.

2) Where do you like to shop the most often?
I’ve been doing a lot of online shopping since moving to Germany (mostly because the dollar is cheaper than euro), and I am very happy with everything I’ve bought from Forever21. Their Plus line is stylish, well made, and very affordable.
3) If you were to splurge on an item, what would you buy?
I’d die to buy some Jimmy Choo or Christian Louboutin shoes!
4) Where do you want to travel to? We NEED to see London before our time is done in Europe!
5)What is your style? I’d say at the moment it is “Comfy Chic with Diva Flair.”
6)Do you spend more time on your hair, deciding what you are going to wear or makeup?
Definitely the outfit. My hair is super easy to do, and I’ve got my makeup routine down to a science. But dressing is still tough for me to do in a hurry!
7) What is your favorite trend at the moment? The awesome fringed bags that are popping up everywhere on the spring runways!

8)What is your favorite animal? Cat:) We have two.

9)Do you play any sports? If so, what are they? I’m not able to do anything at the moment because of back surgery, but I enjoy volleyball the most.
10) What are your hobbies? BLOGGING, ha! Otherwise, dancing and karaoke.
11) What are your favorite songs? That’s hard for me. I love so many, but my current favorite is “Let it Go” from FROZEN.
Now it’s my turn to nominate!
OK lovelies – congrats! Here are your questions!
1. What beauty product can you NOT live without?
2. Who is your “style icon”?
3. Which beauty product is worth paying extra for?
4. Which fashion trend are you a fan of?
5. Is there a current fashion trend you’re NOT a fan of?
6. If you could be dressed by any designer, who would it be?
7. Which fashion publication do you look forward to reading?
8. Is there a TV show you are totally obsessed with? Which one?
9. Which celebrity has the best red carpet style?
10. What is your favorite place to visit?
11. How would you describe your fashion style?
There you go! Don’t forget to link me back with your answers!

DailyVenusDiva.com Rocks!

What made me literally SQUEAL with delight today? Seeing my newest article on DailyVenusDiva.com‘s website! I had my first article  (regarding my love affair with Clinique products) published with this wonderful online magazine last month, and thankfully Editor in Chief Stephanie Penn took another chance on me! I’m looking forward to doing a lot more with DailyVenusDiva. It’s not often enough that women of all sizes and color are celebrated for who they are, and this magazine is all about that appreciation. Curves definitely rule!

To read my article, “Finally – A Retailer Goes ‘Real’: Retailer Aerie Pledges To Stop Retouching Photos” click here!

I’m not quite ready to walk around in my heels, but I couldn’t resist pulling out one of my favorite pairs in anticipating of spring! The weather in the Ramstein area has been curiously mild for winter (perpetually stuck in the 40s) and not one flake of snow, but it does rain quite a bit and the days tend to be a bit starved for sunlight. Here’s hoping for more color soon!!!
