Plus Size Models Strut at NYFW!

How exciting is this? Two high end designers, Zana Bayne and Chromat sent out plus size models down the runway during New York Fashion Week!

Plus size models have received exposure in several magazines and retailers as of late, but have not quite made a mark on the “straight sized” runway world of modeling. However, up and coming designer Chromat, who designed Beyoncé’s Superbowl halftime show outfit, showcased model Denise Bidot in her creations. Zana Bayne, who specializes in bondage inspired wear, sent model Gia Geneiveve down the runway, along with other plus size models.

Werk it, girl!

Now, is this the kind of thing one would wear every day? Of course not! But how nice is it to see curves showcased, instead of carefully hidden! These models look amazing!

Here’s hoping more curvy girls walk the runway in years to come!

What is “Plus Size,” Anyway?

“She’s too small to be plus sized.”

I’ve read that response quite often whenever a designer or a magazine features a plus size model. Granted, some of these models are 5’10 and wear a size 12, which in the “real world,” would be considered “straight size.”

However, I just stumbled across a tweet from The Curvy Fashionista (@MarieDenee), where she posts a link from retailer Addition Elle, which asks,

“What is Plus Size?”

Addition Elle’s philosophy on the issue hits the nail on the head for me:

“Plus size” includes a range of shapes and sizes. Some women are short, some are tall, some have wide hips, some have straight hips, some have larger busts, some have smaller busts…but regardless of their features, they have one thing in common.

What is it? Well, that clothing in “traditional” sizes does not fit them, for whatever reason.”

Case in point: I have the WORST time buying shorts. They are usually too tight in the hip, or too loose in the waist. For some reason, I’m in a “no woman’s land” as a size 14.  I don’t want booty shorts or Daisy Dukes. I guess designers must think I want elasticized, pull on polyester shorts (BLEAH!). Apparently, a mid thigh, stylish denim pair in my size is just not possible.

Then I wonder:

But what about a woman who is a size medium on top (say, an 8 or 10), and is pear shaped (a size 12 or 14) on the bottom? Or someone who is a 12 on the bottom, and wears a 38 DD on top? According to the size charts, she’d be “plus size.”

It’s all a bit nuts.

Men’s fashion is not complex. Pants are the waist size, shirts are the chest/neck measurement. If a guy is larger, he goes to the Big and Tall department.

Why can’t women’s fashion convert to such a system?

By the way, after a lot of searching, I DID finally find a pair of denim shorts! I found these from DEB.

Stylish, comfy, and fit great!

Am I a Fashion Victim?

I really enjoy blogging about fashion; it’s become a new passion in my life. However, I am noticing that I am much more susceptible to buying clothes and makeup than ever before! Other bloggers’ looks, enticing emails of special sales, magazine layouts, and Birchbox sample boxes make me feel compelled to “stay current.” The pressure to create a great outfit for pictures is real, and I worry about what I have is “blog worthy.”

Anyone else feel like me? At times, I feel so silly for worrying about this at all.

I also wonder if I’m becoming a slave to trends. For example, I just ordered a floral skirt, thinking “well, floral prints are in right now” versus “will I look utterly ridiculous in that?” I’ve never been a florals kind of gal! Am I stepping out the box, or just boxing myself in to trendiness?

Let’s talk crop tops for a second. They are HOT this season, and I’ve seen examples of curvy gals rocking them well. I’ve actually starting thinking, “which top should I choose for my blog?”

Not considering: “YOUR BOOBS ARE HUGE, AND YOU’LL LOOK LIKE A BOX.”

Perhaps we’ll skip that one!

One thing’s for sure, I don’t want to lose my own sense of style.

My New Pledge:

1. I’m Not 20, and It’s OK.

2. Not Every Trend is For Me.

3. I Don’t Have to Try to Impress.

4. Stay True to Me.

5. Don’t Buy it Because it’s on Sale!

6. Have Fun with Fashion, Don’t Take it So Seriously!

So, keeping with my new pledge, here are a couple of my new favorite looks. This is truly my style:)

It’s important to try new things to avoid getting in a rut. However, there’s a fine line between being stylish and becoming a fashion victim.

So, if you catch me wearing those Teva inspired Prada sandals – please stop me and send me to an intervention, because I’ve gone too far.

Not for me.

Not for me.

Throwback Thursday Throws Me a Curve

Ah, #ThrowbackThursday. You clever bastard. I search for fun pics to post, and I am stopped cold by finding pics of me from 10 years ago, looking, well, FABULOUS. Funny enough, during this point in my life, I thought I needed to take 10-15 lbs off.

Circa 2004.

Circa 2004.

But here it is 2014, and though I feel I’ve come to a healthier state of mind in terms of body acceptance and pushing to expand the idea of what we consider to be “beautiful,” I cannot escape the fact that I am too heavy now.

Yesterday during a doctor’s checkup, I stepped on the scale (always my favorite part) and noticed that 5 lbs crept on over the last month! How could this be?

Was it the Girl Scout cookies I inhaled over the past week? The popcorn at the movies? The Chex Muddy Buddies we devoured while watching March Madness? All of it? Probably.

I’m not going to beat myself up over the gain, I won’t go there. However, I need to put the brakes on the treats. There’s no denying that getting heavier isn’t going to help my back get stronger,  make the joints feel better, or lower my chances or developing diabetes or heart problems. It’s more than a vanity thing for me.

So, I’m going to do this a step at a time. Add more veggies, watch the sugar, drink more water. Walk as much as I can handle while doing physical therapy. And of course, rock some fashion while doing it all!

I don’t expect to become a supermodel. I just want to feel good and if that means having to lose some of my caboose, that’s ok!

"London calling" socks!

“London calling” socks!

Feeling “blue from my top to my toes.”

It’s a struggle sometimes to “age gracefully.” Most of the time, I’m feeling good, working it for all I’ve got, but then there’s that pesky white hair in my eyebrow -the deepening line around the mouth- the softening jaw, that can throw me into a funk.

I think that’s normal, though -to fight through the feeling of “aging.” We want to feel healthy and look good. It’s just navigating the delicate balancing act of accepting what looks graceful versus becoming a plastic freak show. I don’t want to be a slave to my weight or my age.

So here’s for trying to eat better, exercise a little more, and living in the moment. Cheers!

Look for my next post to come from PARIS! Au revoir until next time!

xx Melanie.

OODT: With a spring in my step….

Couldn't decide between pink and purple...so...

Couldn’t decide between pink and purple…so…

It’s an amazing Saturday in Germany, and the hubby and I decided to go for a walk, checking out the trees and bushes that are in bloom. I’m still marveling over the mild weather at this time of year (got to 60 degrees today!), and this was the perfect time to debut my new Vera Bradley flip flops!

From the looks of InStyle, Lucky, Marie Claire, and Glamour magazines, pastels are the hot trend for Spring 2014. I haven’t been much of a pastel girl, but I am easing into this trend. The easiest way for me is to try it with makeup, and yesterday I got NYC’s cream shadow in lavender, plus a gloss in deep berry.

Can't beat paying $1.50 for a new look!

Maxi skirts are also hot this spring, and I was thrilled to find this awesome blue and white maxi WITH POCKETS! Even better, it was on sale at the base exchange (BX) for $13! You can bet I will wear this nonstop this season.

Thank You! Over 1,000 Hits!

When I started CURVES RULE a few months ago, I never imagined the day would come when my blog would hit 1,000 hits! Plus, I reached 100 “likes” on my posts as well! THANK YOU to all of you who have followed, shared, liked, and commented!

My goal with this blog is to help create more acceptance of all body types, whether we be petite or curvaceous. Those of us Fashionistas who are a size 14 and up crave beautiful, stylish, and affordable fashion, just like anyone else. More retailers are paying attention (especially online), but we need more fashion in the stores, too. We will get there! Fashion is for ALL!

In celebration of the new milestone, I decided to change up the design of my page. I think it looks cleaner, and I hope you all like it! Be sure to check out my page “Air Force Wife Life” for traveling tales and what it’s like being in a military family. I will be adding on to that part of my blog very soon.

And last, but not least…I am planning my first giveaway soon! With spring coming, it’s time for some cute new things to wear, and I want to thank you by giving something pretty to celebrate! Stay tuned!

It won't be from Jimmy Choo...but the prize will still be nice!

Finally – A Retailer Goes “Real”

I just did something I’ve never had the guts to do before. I was moved to post a pic of myself with very little makeup (a touch of Clinique CC cream and lip gloss) to my Instagram. Why? Because Aerie, the sister store of American Eagle, has pledged to print pictures of their models without using Photoshop or any retouching. They are also pledging to not use supermodels. “Because there is no reason to retouch beauty. The Real You is Sexy.”  Aerie is also encouraging girls and women to post pictures of themselves to show their real selves. I LOVE this movement!

What else do I love? Aerie offers shirts and bottoms (lingerie inspired) from sizes 00 to 18! How many retailers offer such a broad range? Bras run from 30A to 40DD. I’d like to see bras run a little larger, but this is a very nice start! Everything I’ve seen on the site is affordable, and I think could possibly give Victoria’s Secret a run for their money, considering they offer sizes for we curvier girls!

Most of all, the #AerieReal movement is a step in the right direction of stripping away all of the veneer of Photoshop to show the real woman. We all aren’t supermodels, and I’m glad to see Aerie “gets it.”
