Blogger on a Budget: Fabulous Fringe!

Blk floral fringe1

Hello lovelies!

As you know, I love a bargain, and with a lot of ’70s influence in this season’s looks, I hit Macy’s to find something to rock.

Blk floral fringe side

Macy’s never fails me. I can always find something chic that fits me beautifully for an awesome price. This adorable black floral coverall with sassy fringe from American Rag was marked down to $12! I can wear it with shorts, a jumpsuit, a dress, a skirt!

FREE thrift find!

I paired it with my fantastic thrift find – an Old Navy cotton dress that fits me great! My waist is defined, giving me more of an hourglass. I got this for FREE!!

Of course, I have to trick out my look with a few accessories, so I went gold with this chain necklace and gold cuff from Claire’s Accessories, and lengthened my legs with these beige wedges from Charlotte Russe. Love it!

You might notice I’ve got a black bracelet on. I’ve been working on developing a healthier lifestyle, so I got a Fit Bit! So, I’m tracking steps, exercise, food, and water. Having this definitely makes me more accountable to myself!

However, as you know, I’m not about being a certain size. We all should find beauty in ourselves, regardless of size. My Fit Bit makes me make better decisions about how I treat my body. So, if I end up losing weight, my back would definitely be better for it, plus I want more energy! Who wouldn’t want more energy?

I hope your November is off to a great start! Until next time!

xo, Melanie.

Getting Graphic about My Closet

Supermodel

Top, Charlotte Russe. Maxi skirt, Material Girl.

Lovelies, I hope your summer has been wonderful. I’ve been so busy unpacking box after box of belongings, trying to organize my closet.

Graphic stand 1

After unpacking so much, I realize just how much clothing I’ve collected over the last few years.  It’s actually a bit embarrassing. Call it an obsession or a result of being a fashion blogger, but I’ve discovered that I really do not need so much.

Graphic vignette

The last few days, I’ve said goodbye to several pairs of shoes, tops, pants, and many pairs of favorite leggings. All of these will go to charity for someone else to enjoy. Life is not about collecting things, and it’s time for me to go on a shopping diet!

Graphic BW

I’ve made a pledge to not buy any new clothes for the next three months.  All the looks I’ll show will be “shopped from my closet.” Who else wants to join the pledge? Share your “re-shopped” looks with me!

Prints Charming

Island pant 2

Hello lovelies!

I know, long time, no see…actually, I’ve been suffering from some writer’s block. Until recently, my life has been in limbo, waiting to start a new job and waiting for our belongings to arrive.

The good news is, I am enjoying my new job teaching theatre VERY much. The downside? Pretty much all of my professional clothes are still en route, so I had to do a little shopping (well, that’s not such a bad thing…).

Fortunately, I didn’t have to spend much money to look good! Taking advantage of some AMAZING sales at our Macy’s, I bought a couple of dressy “breezy” pants, two pencil skirts, and a couple of tops. Plus, I joined ShoeDazzle and got two pairs of cute mules for $40!

Here’s one of my new pants (only $11 after discounts!). LOVE this print!

Island pant 3

We curvy girls have been conditioned to not wear prints on the bottom, however, that’s just a silly rule. The print just needs to be in proportion to the body, and keep the rest of the outfit simple.

Shoedazzle mule

These mules are SUPER comfy, and so stylish! I’m a new ShoeDazzle fan:)

Island makeup

I think I’ve got the sunkissed makeup look down pat. Creamy pink and bronze tints on my eyes and cheeks from Temptu give me “lit from within” glow. So easy!

Here’s to hoping the next time I write, my organizers and most importantly, MY BED is here!

Love, laughter, and shoes-

xx Melanie.

Be Italian: The Vatican

Bonjourno! The Hubby and I are home now in Germany, safe and sound, with a TON of pictures! I’m going to spread out my tales of Italy over several posts with fashion musings mixed in, so I hope you will enjoy!

In St. Peter's Square.

In St. Peter’s Square.

We arrived in Rome around 10 p.m., and the first impression was not great. The area where our train stopped looked sketchy;  a LOT of graffiti on buildings, dark streets, and the rain didn’t help matters, either! I would learn later that unfortunately, Rome has a lot of graffiti. However, Italians are very friendly people and many of them speak good English. Thanks to a helpful waiter in a café we stumbled into, we were pointed in the right direction and found our B & B.

A tour of the Vatican and St. Peter’s Square began our first full day. I cannot say this enough; GO TO THE VATICAN IF YOU EVER GET THE OPPORTUNITY. For one thing, you are visiting a separate state within the city of Rome ( you can buy post cards and send them from the Vatican’s post office!), and the artwork is absolutely STUNNING.  If you do visit Italy, book tours with Dark Rome. You’ll get an excellent guide, and a lot of bang for your buck.

Just one of the hundreds of frescos!

Just one of the hundreds of frescos!

My neck became sore by constantly looking up to see the genius works by Michaelangelo and Raphael.

IMG_20140617_104054

I cannot really fully describe what it was like to see the Sistine Chapel. Absolutely no photos were allowed, and what I’ll call “professional shush-ers” stood on the edges of the area to keep people quiet (it is considered a church, after all). But looking up and ACTUALLY SEEING “The Creation of Adam” got me emotional. Just unbelievably beautiful!

Since we had a full day of seeing sights, I kept my look comfy and light. My new tunic from American Rag (available through Macy’s), leggings from Forever 21 Plus, and comfy sneaks did the trick. I wore my new rings from A Wild Violet, an Etsy store that does custom work. Check out the Michigan midi ring!

I got the Michigan and crown ring BOTH for just $23.00! The owners often offer discount codes, so be sure to check them out!

Gotta keep it simple for all the walking! My JustFab bag held EVERYTHING I needed for the day!

Many more adventures to come, so stay tuned!

Trying a Trend: Florals

I love flowers. Their beauty and fragrance just creates happiness.

However…I have not liked wearing florals my entire life! For as long as I can remember, floral patterns have not been a part of my wardrobe. Those kind of patterns just felt “grandma” to me, and I didn’t think there was a way to wear them that looked fashionable.

This year, though, I have pledged to step out of my box a bit and try some new looks. I decided that if I tried out a floral pattern, it would have to be a skirt, because big flowers on my top half would not do me any favors.

I bought this skirt on sale from Macy’s, (only $25.99!) and you know what? I like it!

Even the Hubby likes it, and he’s not a fan of flower patterns, either.

To keep the look from seeming too “sweet,” I added an edge with my chain necklace and strappy wedges.

What I love about this skirt is that it’s lined, pull on style, and best of all…MACHINE WASHABLE!

And ladies, it’s available up to a 3x! (I’m a 14, wearing the 1x, and it’s just a tad too loose, but that’s ok)

It’ll look great with a tank, a blouse, or a t shirt. Dress it up or down!

I don’t expect to wear a lot more of florals, but this skirt will definitely get some mileage.

What trend did you not expect to wear, but did?

Love, laughter, and shoes!

xx Melanie.

Comfy Style: In Praise of the Jumpsuit!

Spring 2014 is ripe with trends; the crop top, the midi, cool pastels, mesh trim, and the jumpsuit. I’ve seen a few curvy girls rock the crop top, but I am still skeptical about how good it would look on me (I am quite busty, and I don’t think I need MORE attention paid to that area). However, I do love the look of a slinky jumpsuit – it’s so late 70s Studio 54 chic.

Being the thrifty fashionista I am, I like to try a new trend on the cheap just in case I don’t like it. Luckily, Macy’s was having a sale on plus size wear, and I snagged this NY Collection black jumpsuit! It’s slinky, comfy, machine washable, and my favorite attribute: POCKETS!

I added the coin belt!

I also got some FANTASTIC deals from Fashion to Figure, a store that caters to the curvy woman (sizes 12-26). Amazingly, I got a dress, faux leather jacket, and jewelry ALL for under $50! Here’s the earrings and Egyptian style necklace I ordered!

Complete the look with these studded heels from Just Fab, and I’m ready to go dancing!

On a completely different note, unfortunately my University of Michigan Wolverines didn’t win the Big 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. Even more unfortunate, my husband’s Michigan State Spartans won (boo!!). Fort those of you unfamiliar, these two schools are BIG rivals. It’s always exciting to watch them “go at it!”

Well….there’s always the NCAA Tournament to look forward to! My alma mater, the University of Florida Gators are a #1 seed and the SEC Conference Champions! GO GATORS!!!!

Black and White and Chanel

The signs of spring bring forth...Chanel sunglasses!

The signs of spring bring forth…Chanel sunglasses!

It’s been a bizarrely mild winter in Germany! While my friends and family back home in Michigan are having one of the coldest, snowiest winters on record, not ONE snowflake has dropped here in the Kaiserslautern area. Today made it up to 53 degrees, so I decided to celebrate the early signs of spring by breaking out my treasured Chanel sunglasses.

These glasses are a gift from my stepmom, who has the best knack for finding designer duds for a fraction of the original price. I don’t wear these glasses very often because I’m terrified I’ll break them, but today felt like a good day to rock them!

Hello...lovah!

Hello…lovah!

I’m still not pleased with Mr. Lagerfeld’s comments about curvy girls, but that’s no need to throw these away. So, I’m showing him just how good a curvy girl can look wearing his brand. Take that, Karl!

Chanel and headband

Eat your heart out, Karl.

I also wanted to rock my tuxedo leggings from INC, which I got from Macy’s a few months back. Macy’s is one of the few larger retailers that carry stylish, affordable looks for curvy gals. These leggings have a thicker fabric, so I thought I’d better get a few more wears before the summer comes!

Tuxedo leggings

I LOVE the black and white trend for spring! It can look crisp, sophisticated, punkish, rock n roll, expensive, modern…so many ways to wear it!

What do you look forward to wearing for spring?

Love, laughter and shoes! xx Melanie.
